A CHRISTIAN TRADITION AT THE TABLE

Ancient churches in a distinct Orthodox communion

Oriental Orthodox

Coptic, Armenian, Ethiopian, Syriac, and other ancient churches.

WHAT CHRISTIANS SHARE

Before the differences, there is a confession.

01

BELIEF

Christ’s divinity and humanity held together

These churches receive the first three ecumenical councils and draw deeply on the teaching of Cyril of Alexandria. Their separation from churches that received the Council of Chalcedon in 451 has a long history.

Oriental Orthodox teaching affirms that Jesus is fully divine and fully human. Its language of union does not mean that his humanity disappears into his divinity. The Coptic account of dialogue with Eastern Orthodox churches explains this distinction and their shared efforts toward understanding.

02

LIFE TOGETHER

A faith lived in worship

Prayer, fasting, monastic life, and the study of Scripture shape these communities. Their worship should be encountered in its particular church setting rather than reduced to one uniform style.

The Armenian Church’s account of the Divine Liturgy centers worship on the proclamation of the Gospel and Holy Communion. Its description offers one concrete window into this wider family’s sacramental life.

03

DISCERNMENT

Dialogue with care for real differences

Modern theological dialogue has helped churches explain their beliefs to one another. Agreement reached in dialogue should not be mistaken for full restored communion.

Ask how a local parish understands its heritage, welcomes visitors, and guides participation in worship. Respect its practices around receiving communion.

HONEST DIFFERENCES

Questions that remain between Christians

  • Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox are distinct church families.
  • Historic language about Christ requires careful explanation; it should not be reduced to a denial of his humanity.
  • Church histories, languages, and pastoral practices vary within the family.
