A CHRISTIAN TRADITION AT THE TABLE

A worldwide communion of local churches

Catholic Church

A sacramental, apostolic communion united with the Bishop of Rome and centered on Jesus Christ.

WHAT CHRISTIANS SHARE

Before the differences, there is a confession.

01

SCRIPTURE · TRADITION · TEACHING

How Catholics recognize authority

Catholics receive the Bible as the inspired Word of God. They understand Scripture and Sacred Tradition as closely connected ways in which the one apostolic faith is handed on.

The Magisterium—the teaching office of the bishops in communion with the pope—is understood as serving the Word of God, not standing above it. Not every statement by a priest, bishop, theologian, or pope is infallible; Catholic teaching recognizes different levels of authority.

02

COMMUNION · BISHOPS · CONSULTATION

How decisions are made

Catholic governance is episcopal rather than congregational. The pope has a unique universal ministry; bishops govern dioceses; priests and deacons serve under episcopal oversight; laypeople and religious share fully in the church’s mission through baptism.

Councils, synods, episcopal conferences, theologians, canon lawyers, and lay consultation all contribute, but their authority differs. Universal doctrine is not established by a parish vote or public opinion alone.

03

WORD · SACRAMENT · PRAYER

A life gathered around the Eucharist

The Mass joins Scripture, preaching, prayer, thanksgiving, and Holy Communion. Catholics recognize seven sacraments and confess Christ as truly present in the Eucharist.

Devotion to Mary and the saints is understood as honor and a request for prayer, never worship owed to God alone. Other Christians may still find these practices troubling; honest dialogue should name that disagreement clearly.

04

DOCTRINE · DISCIPLINE · DISCERNMENT

How disagreement and change are understood

Catholicism distinguishes the received deposit of faith, genuine doctrinal development, changeable disciplines, pastoral applications, and prudential judgments. Canon law also recognizes that laypeople may make their needs and views known to their pastors.

The church contains deep legitimate diversity of rites, spiritualities, cultures, and theological schools. Popularity does not make an opinion official doctrine, and sincere disagreement should not automatically be treated as lack of faith.

Ask of every claim: Is this official teaching, binding discipline, pastoral judgment, common practice, or active internal debate?

GIFTS TO DISCOVER

Three things worth knowing.

A song for creation

In 1225, Francis of Assisi composed the Canticle of the Creatures, praising God through the sun, water, wind, and earth. Its affectionate language of brothers and sisters invites people to see creation as a family to cherish.

Many ways to worship

Catholic worship includes Eastern as well as Latin traditions. The Second Vatican Council encouraged Eastern Catholic churches to preserve their own liturgies and spiritual heritage, recognizing that unity can include a rich variety of traditions.

Help across boundaries

U.S. Catholic bishops founded Catholic Relief Services in 1943 to assist survivors of World War II in Europe. The agency’s Catholic identity inspires assistance based on people’s needs, regardless of their religion, race, or ethnicity.

Official and primary sources

These sources state Catholic teaching at different levels. A catechism, council constitution, canon, discipline, prudential judgment, and private opinion should not be treated as interchangeable.
