A CHRISTIAN TRADITION AT THE TABLE

A worldwide communion of autonomous churches

Anglican & Episcopal

A tradition shaped by Scripture, creeds, common prayer, sacramental worship, bishops, and synods.

WHAT CHRISTIANS SHARE

Before the differences, there is a confession.

01

SCRIPTURE · TRADITION · REASON

A faith prayed as well as stated

Historic formularies teach that Scripture contains all things necessary to salvation. Creeds, tradition, and reason help the church read faithfully, but classical Anglican teaching gives Scripture a unique governing place.

The Book of Common Prayer has formed Anglican belief through shared worship. Anglo-Catholic, evangelical, charismatic, and broad-church streams often emphasize different features of the same inheritance.

02

BISHOPS · CLERGY · LAITY

Episcopal and synodical governance

Member churches are autonomous, governed by their own bishops, constitutions, canons, synods, and conventions. International Instruments of Communion foster relationship but do not ordinarily legislate for every province.

A decision by The Episcopal Church or Church of England does not automatically bind Kenya, Nigeria, Australia, or another province. Provincial autonomy makes global persuasion and communion especially important—and sometimes fragile.

03

COMMON PRAYER · SACRAMENTS

Unity formed in worship

Anglican worship joins extensive Scripture, prayer, preaching, creed, confession, Eucharist, and mission. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the two sacraments ordained by Christ in the gospel; other sacramental rites remain important.

Anglicans affirm Christ’s real gift in Communion but explain that presence in different ways. Worship may range from elaborate Anglo-Catholic liturgy to simple evangelical or charismatic forms.

04

PROVINCES · COMMUNION · CONSCIENCE

When lawful decisions divide the church

Synods and conventions can lawfully change provincial canons or liturgy, but a valid vote is not by itself proof of faithfulness to Christ. Scripture, apostolic faith, prayer, and relationship with the wider church remain tests.

Women’s ordination, marriage, sexuality, biblical interpretation, and the reach of provincial autonomy are disputed across the Communion. Some differences coexist; others have produced impaired communion, parallel structures, and separation.

Always distinguish shared Anglican inheritance, a province’s official policy, an international Communion statement, and an individual parish’s practice.

GIFTS TO DISCOVER

Three things worth knowing.

An evening of music and prayer

Choral Evensong brings together Scripture, prayer, and music from the Anglican tradition. At Westminster Abbey, the service follows the Book of Common Prayer, with sung psalms, canticles, and anthems.

Creation belongs in the mission

The Anglican Communion’s Five Marks of Mission connect sharing faith with practical care. Alongside teaching and serving people in need, they include pursuing peace, addressing injustice, and protecting the life of the earth.

A cross made from the ruins

After Coventry Cathedral was bombed in 1940, a local priest shaped three fallen medieval nails into a cross. This Anglican cathedral’s symbol of reconciliation later connected churches and organizations across borders through the Community of the Cross of Nails.

HONEST DIFFERENCES

Questions that remain between Christians

  • The authority of Scripture and historic formularies
  • Papal authority and the meaning of apostolic succession
  • Christ’s Eucharistic presence and sacramental theology
  • Women’s ordination, marriage, and sexuality
  • Provincial autonomy and global Communion accountability

STAYING AT THE TABLE

Ways to speak and listen faithfully

  • Use the Chicago–Lambeth Quadrilateral as a starting point
  • Learn which Anglican body can actually decide the question
  • Pray and read Scripture together before debating labels
  • Acknowledge colonial wounds and present power imbalances
  • Ask what visible unity requires beyond friendship

READ THE TRADITION IN ITS OWN WORDS

Official and primary sources

Anglican sources have different authority. Historic formularies express shared inheritance; Communion bodies offer counsel; each autonomous province adopts and enforces its own law.
